Mike AssumMichael Assum (Acting President)

Michael is a successful entrepreneur and businessman with a strong background in startups, mergers and acquisitions, organizational development, continuous improvement, rapid sustained growth, and improved competitive effectiveness. He has been consultant to numerous Fortune 100 companies and organizations for 28 years including companies such as Procter & Gamble, McGraw-Hill, Pacific Telesis, Tektronix, Exxon, Northern Telecom and numerous others. He is a co-founder of Compassion Happens, Inc. He served on the boards of many non-profits, including being the President of Boys & Girls Club of Monterey and the Founding President of Challenge Day. He was an officer in the US Navy Nuclear Power Submarine Program and taught graduate courses in Management of Productive Operations. He holds an undergraduate degree focus in Math and Physics, with additional graduate education in nuclear engineering, organization development, and business. Michael helps CHBD with Strategy, Business Connections, Fundraising, and Collaboration with other non-profits.

 

Julie DeVitoJulie Devito (Secretary)

Julie founded Realization Partners 15 years ago with the mission of helping people realize their potentials as human beings and to reach personal goals in life that have meaning and make a difference. Through her studies in psychology, neuroscience and integrative health & medicine, Julie has developed her coaching and mentoring programs to focus on integrating the health of mind, body and spirit. Julie has a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology and is working on a Doctorate Degree (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology with a focus on learning and behavioral health care. Julie brings her expertise in Training, Curriculum Design, Organization Skills, Fundraising to CHBD.

 

Samson CheungSamson Cheung, PhD. (Treasurer)

Dr Cheung is a Sr. Architect Leader in the Supercomputing Center at NASA Ames Research Center, Mountain View, CA. He obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at UC Davis in 1989. His interest is methodology in climate modeling using latest computational models. He was the vice-president and now the trustee of one of the oldest Chinese American non-profit organizations CAIES (Chinese American Institute of Engineers and Scientists). Besides Dr. Cheung’s professional interest, he is infatuated with Chinese Metaphysics and philosophy; in particular the study of I-Ching (The book of Change) and its development towards numerology and geography. In order to promote and introduce Chinese culture and philosophy, Dr. Cheung has founded the School of Yimutology (www.yimutology.org) to teach and introduce the Chinese Metaphysics and I-Ching to the public. Dr Cheung brings insight from Chinese Metaphysics and Quantum Physics to the application of acupressure for self-care.

 

Daniel GreeneDaniel Greene (Board member)

Daniel is an expert in finances and taxes, being a former business tax auditor for the state of California and worked with MailBox Etc’s Global Operations for many years. He sits on several non-profit boards and home school his kids. Daniel runs his CPA firm in southern California and conducts his own tax seminar. Daniel brings his expertise to CHBD in all matters regarding finances and accounting.

 

 

Robert JohnsonRobert D Johnson (Board member)

Robert has over 35 years of experience as a corporate leader and global consultant. His patented experiential tools comprise the essential elements of his unique seminars and workshops. They form the basis for the engaging, probing, thought-provoking presentations for which he is known. Most noteworthy is BcubeTM, a premiere experiential, team dynamics, tabletop tool, which has been used by business leaders on four continents. Researchers have shown it to be effective in teaching collaboration as a vital problem-solving skill. RP3 and The Cooperation Matrix are low risk, high impact decision making processes developed by Robert. RP3 consists of experiential, strategic planning tools based on Systems Thinking methodology. Using scenario planning principles, the process helps individuals and teams anticipate and explore the impact of key decisions before they are implemented. Robert helps CHBD with Strategy, Team Building, Program Development, Curriculum Creation, Fundraising, Holistic Evaluation, Benchmarking, Mindfulness, Client Outcome Planning, and Data Modeling.

 

SarahArnoldPhotoSarah Arnold, M.D. (Board member)

Dr Arnold is currently a family physician and serve as Captain in the United States Public Health Service working for the Food and Drug Administration. Sarah graduated from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in 1995 and completed a Family Medicine residency at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton in 2001 and a Preventive Medicine residency at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 2008. She was a Navy physician for fourteen years, during which she has held several leadership positions in operational medicine and deployed several times, including two tours in Iraq. Her last position in the Navy was acting surgeon, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California, where she became intimately involved with Combat Stress and Resilience. Sarah’s involvement with Center for Healing By Design is an expression of her own opinions and experiences and is not representative of the Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Public Health Service, or any government agency.

 

Garlenia DavisGarlenia Davis (Board member)

Garlenia is a mom of four children, homeschool educator and former Air Force military spouse. Her working career spans many sectors to include retail, government, state veteran’s nursing home and rehabilitation center. She is presently an in home care provider, family advocate, domestic violence mentor, tutor and community leader in Palmdale along with being a recent Ms. Naturalista Pageant winner and will be running for city councilwoman this month. She began her journey of investigating complementary medicine when her eldest son developed asthma at age 2. When the traditional medical model was not working, she sought more natural means for healing his body. Her belief that every problem has an answer and that wisdom cries out in the streets, leads her to the conclusion that if she doesn’t have the answer she must be on the wrong street.

Lucy HuLucy Hu, L.Ac. Dipl. Ac (NCCAOM)

Director of Pediatrics at Five Branches University Since 1989 Senior Professor MD (China), Shenyang University, China Diplomat in TCM, Chinese Acupuncture and Medical Institute, Hong Kong Former Pediatrician and Instructor, Dalian Children’s Hospital, China Professor, Five Branches University, Santa Cruz, CA. In her three decades of medical experience, she has specialized in pediatrics. Lucy became a licensed acupuncturist in California in 1987 and obtained her National Certification (NCCAOM) in both Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology. In 2004, Lucy presented a case study of a child with a severe genetic metabolic disorder at the International Conference on Diagnosis and Treatment of Difficult Diseases by Herbal Therapy and Acupuncture in Hangzhou, China. She treated the child with success unobtainable by Western methods. After 12 months of treatment, the child’s health and quality of life continued to improve significantly. Lucy maintains a private practice for adults and children in Santa Clara, California. Professor Hu teaches in the Departments of TCM Clinical Medicine and TCM Clinical Training and is a faculty member of the Five Branches DAOM (Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) program.
